Our beloved Trummie Lee Neal, affectionately known as “Nancy,” was born the 8th child of 10 siblings on March 20, 1947. Nancy was born in Concord Ga through the union of Ora Lee and Otis Neal. Otis and Ora Lee later moved their family from Georgia to settle in Columbus, Ohio, where she was raised. Nancy attended Fulton Elementary School, George C. Berry Junior High School, and was a 1966 graduate of East High School.
After graduating from East, Nancy held various employment positions, such as cafeteria worker at Capital University, nurse’s aide at Saint Raphael Retirement Home, and at The Pauline Home for the Aged, and data entry clerk at National City Bank. Nancy and her sister Beulah opened a daycare center called Lucy Dean. Nancy had a true love for babies and children. Nancy and Beulah became mother figures to the children that they cared for at Lucy Dean and made positive impacts on the lives of those children.
As Nancy developed a love for the Lord, she, along with her parents and her other siblings, became members of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. During her time as a young member there, Nancy sang in the Youth Choir and was a member of the Young People’s Division (YPD). Later, as an adult, Nancy would become a member of the Nurses’ Corps, and the Bethel Bowling League. Nancy continued her journey with the Lord, and her love for Him grew as she began attending Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church.
Nancy’s love for family showed through her sacrifice, devotion, and commitment, as she became the primary caregiver to both aging parents. Additionally, because of her kind and caring heart, Nancy made a true, lasting, loving, and positive impact on the lives of many of the children of our family who were growing and becoming adults during that time. During her younger years, Nancy’s love for life showed as she enjoyed attending concerts and events in the city and around the state. Nancy loved watching college football and NBA basketball. She was an avid Ohio State University football fan and a fan of the LA Lakers during the early years and later the Cleveland Cavaliers. Nancy loved to travel and was able to take several trips, including multiple trips to Bermuda with her sister Carolyn, New York City, and Los Angeles, California. Nancy’s love for life showed through her love of getting together with friends and family and cooking wonderful meals for them. Nancy loved to sew, and she made several clothing items for herself, family, and friends and was the family’s “resident seamstress”. Nancy and her sister Beulah enjoyed participating in the Senior Arts and Crafts program through the Columbus Parks and Recreation Department, where they made beautiful ceramic creations focused on the African American experience. Nancy and Beulah won several blue-ribbon awards for their creations.
Blessed with 79 years of life, Nancy went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 18, 2026. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ora Lee and Otis Neal, siblings Connie Neal and Janie Neal, Virgal Neal, Mary Emma Brown, Annie Florence Williams (aka Sue), Beulah Arnold, and close brother-in-law Richard Williams (Annie). She leaves to cherish her memory, siblings Carolyn Turner, Thelma Flowers, James (aka Jake) Neal (Terry), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and special pets, Angel and Brandon.
