Mary Elaine Nesbitt Steward departed this life early Monday, December 11. Elaine, as she was called by most people, was born on November 19, 1935, to Harvey and Essie Reynolds. She is predeceased by her parents, first husband, Joseph Nesbitt, second husband, Fred Steward and brother, Harvey Reynolds. She also lost her three children, Pamela Dawson, Joseph (Tommy) Nesbitt, and Timmy Nesbitt.
Elaine gave her life to the Lord at an early age. She attended Baptist churches as a child, but joined Clair United Methodist Church after marrying Fred. At Clair, Elaine blossomed into a true leader of the church. She became a Lay Speaker, and she often delivered messages of hope and inspiration to the congregation. Later in her time at Clair, she would become the Lay Leader, and represented the church at Annual Conference. She was also one of Clair’s finest ushers greeting each and everyone with a smile. On Saturdays, you could always find her in the Food Pantry helping to serve hot meals. She would always insist that a devotional time be held before the meal. Her greatest joy, however, was working as a Sunday School teacher to the teens. They loved her, and she loved them.
One of the highlights of Elaine’s life was her ownership of the Southeast Fish Market for over thirty years. She thoroughly enjoyed her customers and delighted in providing fresh fish to the community. She often remarked that people still remembered her years later calling her “the fish lady.”
Elaine was a member of The International Toastmistress Club (ITC). She was a superb speaker and was a multiple winner of many state speech contests.
Elaine leaves her sisters, Rosa Reynolds and Carolyn Reynolds Tatum, and brother, Eugene Reynolds to remember her and keep the family together and growing. Her grandchildren Raven Dawson, Brandon (Rochelle) Dawson, Amber Dawson, Latoya Nesbitt, and Ashley Brown will always have memories of a devout and Christian woman. She will also be missed and remembered by a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, church family, and friends.
