Columbus

Lorraine M. Hill, 93, of Columbus, born in New York, passed away peacefully at home on January 29, 2026. She was born in Brooklyn, New York, on January 11, 1933, to the late Lemuel and Lorraine (Tucker) Dabney.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Alfred Hill, Sr. and her two sons, Michael Paul Hill and Alfred Joseph, Hill, Jr.

Surviving family includes her sister Barbara (Henry) Goddard and her own four children, Valerie M. Orr, Nancy Hill McClary, Timothy W. (Sherrill) Hill, and Lorraine M. (Nathaniel, Jr.) Edwards, and nephew Carlton (Marie) Travis; grandchildren, Katherine M. Clement, Christine D. (Will) Clark, Alfred J. (Jasmine) Hill, III, Allan (Tanya) Hill, and Timaine W. Hill; 8 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; and a host of nieces and nephews, and family friends.

Lorraine’s immediate family thrived in Brooklyn attending St. Peter Claver Church. As a teenager, Lorraine was very active with skating, dancing, community theater, and taking care of her younger siblings. She met and dated Alfred Hill where they were known as “Bunny” and “The Cap.” In 1949, Alfred joined the United States Air Force and the two were wed in 1952. During this time in the service, the Hill family lived in Brooklyn; Texas; Great Falls, Montana; Columbus, Ohio; Rantoul, Illinois; Wichita, Kansas; and then finally settled in Columbus where Alfred retired after 20 years in the military.

Lorraine was an avid reader and could always be found with a book in her hands. Lorraine spent several years caring for her husband as his health declined. She also loved to sew. She will be remembered for several of her famous sayings. One being, “If you have nothing nice to say don’t say anything.”

When she joined St. Dominic Church, she sang soprano in both the Concert and Gospel choirs, taught youth ministry classes, served as treasurer of the Altar Rosary Society, served on the ministry of Lector as a scripture reader, and was selected as “Catholic Woman of the Year.” Lorraine always sold a generous number of tickets for St. Dominic Church events. She also ensured that all of her children followed the traditions of the Catholic faith.

Lorraine was honored for working 20 years as Cost Accounting/Accounts Payable clerk at R.G. Barry Corp. After leaving that position, she was hired at the Defense Finance and Accounting Service, Columbus Center until she retired. Lorraine enjoyed work for fun assisting teachers with elementary school students. She volunteered at Columbus Association for the Performing Arts (CAPA) as an usher, seating guest at the various concert and play productions.
