Carole Ann Phillips Knox, 80, of Columbus, Ohio passed away un-expectantly on Saturday May 10, at her home. She leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and caring. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, to the late Talmadge, Sr. and Beatrice Phillips on September 16, 1944, Carole was always an explorer. She graduated from East High School, then attended The Ohio State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1971. While attending OSU, Carole was initiated into the Alpha Kappa Alpha Incorporated, Theta Chapter for women in education in 1970. Many years later, in 2020, during the pandemic, Carole would cross the threshold and become a Golden Soror AKA.
Shortly after graduating and receiving her teacher license, Carole was hired by Columbus City Schools, with Ohio Avenue Elementary School being her initial teaching assignment. She would eventually meet a young Navy man by the name of Norman Knox and the couple wed in 1974. From that moment on, Carole and Norman explored the world for 32 years, until his death in 2006. Carole was able to use her teaching background during the time she and Norman were stationed overseas. While employed by the Department of Defense Children’s School, she taught elementary children in Japan and Puerto Rico. She was never afraid of a challenge. In 1985, Carole earned her Master of Art degree from Michigan State University, with a focus on early childhood education, and she would periodically continue taking college courses, including Japanese studies, leadership, and succeeding with students in poverty.
Anyone that knew Carole knew she was passionate about her family, passionate about her dog, Bradford, passionate about education, passionate about her sorority, and passionate about traveling. Carole had explored six continents, with Japan and South Africa holding a special place in her heart. Her home was decorated with artifacts from all over the world. She was in the process of planning a 2026 trip to Dubai, when she was called to her eternal resting place. Carole was also a member of St. Johns AME in Worthington, Ohio, as well as an active member of Franklin County Chapter 252 of AARP, having served as treasurer for the organization. She also volunteered and donated her time and energy to numerous organizations.
Carole will be deeply missed by her family, which includes her brother Talmadge (Mattie) Phillips; niece, Tonja Phillips; nephew, Aaron (Tammy) Phillips; great nephews Vincent and Camden; and her AKA sisterhood.
