In His infinite wisdom, God chose to close the book on the life of Bobbie Louise Gentry on September 27, 2023.
Bobbie was born in Birmingham, Alabama to the late Raymond and Lillie Bennett. The oldest of five children (Bobbie, Marie, Raymond, Jr., Norman, and Jacqueline). Both parents, brothers, Raymond, Jr. and Norman, and sister, Marie preceded her in death.
Bobbie migrated with her family to St. Clairsville, Ohio where she spent her childhood and graduated from St. Clairsville High School with honors. She joined the First Baptist Church in St. Clairsville, Ohio and became a very active member. She served as the Choir Director, Sunday School Teacher, President of the Missionary Society and worked on many other committees within the church. She was the Financial Secretary for the Women of Mount Zion
Baptist Convention (Ohio Valley Region) for over ten years.
Bobbie was united in marriage to Daniel W. Gentry, Sr., and they became the proud parents of five children: Deborah, Denise, Daniel, Jr. (a.k.a. Danny-Boy), Doreen, and Kimberly.
In 1968, Bobbie moved to Columbus, Ohio and became an active member of the Oakley Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of the late Reverend Jacob J. Ashburn, and remained an active member under the pastorate of Bishop Andy C. Lewter, Bishop Jonathan Jamal H. McReynolds and current Pastor, Bishop Herman D. Ware. She loved her church and was always ready to serve for the betterment of God's house. Bobbie was president of the Missionary Circle and served as Chaplain of The Wonderful Grace Choir for many years, Sunday School teacher, Secretary and Treasurer, President of the Church Anniversaries and many other Church groups and committees.
Bobbie was a happy and outgoing person. She was easy to talk with. She was a giving and helpful person who lived by the moto: "If I can help somebody, then my living will not be in vain." She would often visit the sick and shut-in, offering any help as needed. You never had to question her conversation because she was direct, either causing you to laugh or frown. She said
what she meant and meant what she said. She was also a stickler for time.
Bobbie worked thirty years for the state of Ohio. Bobbie's community service included membership in the International Black Women's Congress, Joshua Davis Fountain of Youth for underprivileged children, Junior Leaguers Club, the J. Ashburn Women Who Care and 3D Events.
Bobbie’s Sorority involvement included: Order of the Easter Star P.H.A., Past Ancient Matron to the Order of Heroines of Jericho, Past Illustrious Commandress of the Daughters of Isis and member of the Golden Circle Valley Assembly (Capital # 36).
