On Thursday, January 23rd, 2025 , Betty Jane Scott gained her angel wings at home surrounded by love and family at the age of 98. Betty was born on November 18 1926 to the late John Miles Mitchell and Eugenie Brown in Columbus, Ohio. She attended high school in Arlington, Ohio before relocating to New York where she worked several different jobs including, a clerk at Bank of America and the fur department at Macy’s, until meeting her late husband, Robert Scott. Betty and Robert wed in June of 1954, and went on to have three beautiful children: David Scott, Diane Scott and Barbara Hundley.
Betty enjoyed traveling and visited many states and countries including Grenada, Barbados, and Aruba. Betty was known for her green thumb. She was known to take great care of not only her own plants, but any around her that needed extra love and attention. Betty also enjoyed writing letters to keep in touch with loved ones. She’d often include jokes and little things that reminded her of you like coupons, notepads, and cut outs.
Betty had an unrelenting love for her family. Her greatest accomplishment was being a mother first, but later in life she held many titles : Mimi, Grandma Betty, Aunt Betty, Boopsie, Captain, and Ms. Betty were just a few. Hearing and being a part of all the big and small achievements of her loved ones brought her true joy and happiness. She spread her love between her sister, JoAnn (Ervin Maddrey), her children David Scott, Diane Scott, and Barbara (Michael Sr.) Hundley. She also shared her love with a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Betty was the heart of our family whose love knew no bounds and whose spirit touched us all. Betty had an extraordinary gift for making each of us all feel special. She taught us to love each other, enjoy life, and to have a good laugh … because life is short so why waste it ? Though Betty has left us in the physical world, her legacy of love and goodness lives on in each of us. Her love will continue to shape our lives and warm our hearts forever. So as we leave today, please remember how blessed Betty was. What a joy and beauty she was. And more importantly, to love and care for those who are close to you every day without fail, just as she did.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Betty’s name to Mercy Home for Boys and Girls in Chicago or Mercy Ship.
