Aretha Ellen “Rita” Sims ( Baker), born on May 20, 1958, in Columbus, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home on January 21, 2026, in her hometown of Columbus. She was 67 years old. A lifelong resident of Columbus, Rita attended South High School and remained deeply connected to her community throughout her life. She was a woman of faith and a devoted member of Kimberly Parkway Church of God, where she found spiritual strength and fellowship. Rita was known for her vibrant spirit and joyful presence. She loved to sing and dance, often filling rooms with music and laughter. A true enthusiast of jazz concerts, she cherished the rhythm and soul that echoed through every note. Her sense of humor and love for joking brought smiles to those around her, making every gathering brighter. Family was at the heart of Rita’s world. She leaves behind her beloved Husband, Herbert R. Sims; her mother, Merlene Jones; her cherished daughter, Rashida; many brothers and sisters; seven grandchildren—Victor, Devion, Lamar, Shemar, Lashay Tyree, Tico; and eight great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews who brought immense joy to her life. Rita especially treasured time spent with her great-grandchildren, creating memories filled with warmth and love. She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Eggleton; her sisters, Maryann Stultz and Cassandra Johnson Farren; and her brother, Brian Baker. Rita will be remembered as a good wife, a loving mother and grandmother, a great sister and daughter—roles she embraced with unwavering devotion. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. May her memory bring comfort to all who mourn her
