Obituary

Ammer James, affectionately called “Nanny” by many, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 12, 2026, at the age of 91. Ammer was born on January 1, 1935, in Columbus, Ohio, to Joseph and Sarah Scott.

Ammer attended Columbus Public Schools and graduated from Central High School. She later retired after more than 30 years of service with the Columbus Public School District, where she worked as a librarian and teacher’s aide. She loved working with children and connecting with others, and throughout her life, she truly knew no strangers.

Ammer was a devoted member of Bethany Baptist Church in Columbus, Ohio for many years. During that time, she faithfully served on the Deaconess Board and assisted with Vacation Bible School and various youth outreach activities. Ammer loved God deeply, and her life was a beautiful expression of faith, filled with grace, kindness, and love.

Ammer is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years Tommy Lee James, parents Joseph and Sarah Scott and siblings, Garvin Hadden, Hezekiah Hadden, Ellen Miller, Sarah Sanders, and twin sister Alta Scott.

Her memory will be forever cherished by her daughter Karen Denise Fullerton; sons Demarco Ray James (Mildred), Kenneth Lee James, Keith Lee James, Kevin Andre James (Vivian); granddaughters Meghan Elizabeth James, Chantelle Nicole Fullerton (Gary), Takeiciou Bennett (Darren), Taylor James; grandsons Shawn Demarco Ray James Jr., Jonathan Paul James (Grace), Hugh Leslie Fullerton Jr (Jodi), Gareth Patrick Fullerton (Victoria), Kenneth James Jr, and Keith James Jr; 15 Great-Grandchildren; Sister Carlene Allen, Sisters-In-Law Margie Pitchford, Frankie James; Brothers-In-Law Bonnie James (Yang Shim Chang), and Lindsay James; Loving Nieces and Nephews, friends, and extended family.

Family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until time of service at 12:00 p.m. at Bethany Baptist Church, 959 Bulen Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43206, Monday, March 30, 2026. Pastor Jonathan W. Bradford, Sr. Officiating. Arrangements entrusted to Diehl-Whittaker Funeral Service, 1370 E Main St, Columbus, OH 43205. Burial Monday, March 30, 2026, at Glen Rest Memorial Estate.
