Wallace Wyatt

Wallace Wyatt was born in Madison, Georgia on April 26, 1935. After graduation from Pearl High School he joined the United States Air force and served in the Pacific and was stationed at Lockbourne Air Force base in Columbus, Ohio. He is preceded in death by parents Hurlet and Corene Wyatt, brothers, Rudolph, Carlton, and Robert Wyatt and Sister Leila Carr. Brother Wyatt attended college on the G.I. bill and earned a degree in Industrial Management and Business Administration from Franklin University. He was employed with General Motors Corporation and served as the automotive manufacturer for 30 years until retirement. Brother Wyatt is the father of Pamela D. Coleman. In 1962 he married Priscilla Marlene Stewart and to this union they had three daughters, Tamara, Cynthia and Cheryl. In 1958 Brother Wyatt joined the Union Grove Baptist Church and has held many servant leader positions in the church. In 1965 he was ordained as a deacon under the pastorate of the late Reverend Phale D. Hale and served in this role from 1965-1980. In 1997 Brother Wyatt was voted father of the year by the Union Grove Church family. Brother Wyatt’s youth ministry began in 1965, serving as the cub-master for the Boy Scouts at Union Grove, which he served for over 31 years. He encouraged the youth to maintain the scout pledge, oath and slogan. He arranged educational trips and tours for the scouts, their parents and relatives. On several occasions the scouts travelled to Atlanta, Georgia and worshipped at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church. In 1997 he was nominated by the Central Ohio Council through the Action of the National Council of Honor of the Boy Scouts of America and received the “Silver Beaver Award” for distinguished service to youth. Bother Wyatt also received an award of excellence from General Motors in recognition of his “Outstanding service for the Betterment.” Brother Wyatt became involved in the Laymen’s movement in 1964. He was present when the Young David’s (junior laymen) began in Ohio. In 1990 Brother Wyatt became the State Young David’s Superintendent of the Ohio Baptist General Convention and the bible bowl contest was introduced to the Laymen’s Auxiliary, OBGC. In 1995 he was appointed the OBGC State Laymen’s Auxiliary president. In 1997 the first bible bowl contest was held as a part of the State Laymen’s workshop that was held in Columbus, Ohio. In 1997 he was appointed National Chair of the “Shoe to Africa Drive” by the National Baptist Laymen’s movement of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. Over 20,000 pairs of shoes were collected, packed and prepared for shipment to Africa. Brother Wyatt and the late Augustus Dobbins were members of the world witnessing mission team that travel with the shipment of shoes to Africa. In addition to distributing the shoes, the Laymen worked to repair equipment, buildings, and schools and worshipped with their brothers and sisters in southern and central Africa.Brother Wyatt was also a member of the Marion-Franklin Civic Association. He is survived by wife, Priscilla Marlene Wyatt, daughters, Pamela D. Coleman, Tamara L. Freeman, Cynthia (Ricardo) Brown of Richmond, Virginia, and Cheryl (Christopher) Ward. 7 Grandchildren; Wallace, Chanae, Jaylen, Joy, Tia, Kimberly and Lauryn. Nieces; Novita Smith, Angela Wyatt. Nephew Bennie Wyatt and many other relatives and friends.
