Edward B. Mayo

March 24, 1934 — December 1, 2013

Edward (“Eddy”) Mayo began his earthly journey March 24, 1934, in Columbus, Ohio. He was born to the late Phillip and Marie Mayo. Eddy graduated from Central High School in Columbus, Ohio in 1952 where he was a star football player. At the age of 17, Eddie began a 39 year career with the City of Columbus, Sanitation Department. Shortly thereafter Eddy was joined in holy matrimony to the late Barbara Harris, and this union was blessed with four daughters and one son. In 1972 Eddy met and fell in love with Bettye Jo Church of Columbus, Ohio, and on July 21, 1973 Eddy was united in Holy Matrimony to Bettye. On May 2, 1982, together, Eddy and Bettye received Christ as their Lord and Savior at Living Faith Apostolic Church under Bishop Posey, and they joined a ministry under Pastor Dane Clark with Richard and Norma Tarrant where they participated in a house-to-house Bible study. Eddy and Bettye continued serving the Lord at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Columbus, Ohio until 1983, when they accepted the call to help start Bethel Temple Apostolic Church under Pastor Clark. Eddy Mayo remained a member of Bethel Temple Apostolic Church until his transition home with the Lord. Eddy loved to read and study the Word of God and will be remembered for his faithfulness to and love for attending Sunday prayer service at 6AM. In 1991, Eddie retired from the City of Columbus as supervisor for the Sanitation Department. Those who know Eddy remember that he was an avid fan of Big 10 football, especially “The” Ohio State football team, and he enjoyed hunting deer and small game. No one will forget Eddy’s unique “swagger”, which he had right up until the end, and his beautiful, warm smile that he shared with everyone he met. Most importantly, Eddy never hesitated to share the love of God through the Gospel of Jesus Christ, or stop everything he was doing to pray for others. His transition was preceded by the death by his daughter Julie Ann Mayo and son, Phillip “Li’l Phil” Mayo, and his brothers, John (“Jack”) Mayo, Robert Mayo, “J.P” Mayo, Rolland Mayo, and William O. (“Billy”) Mayo, and sister Gloria Mayo Sink. Eddy Mayo is lovingly missed by Bettye Mayo, his wife of 40 years, and his children whom he loved and cherished: Toya (Roosevelt) Cobb, Shirley Mayo, and Yvette Mayo Harris, and his sister, Betty Mayo Thompson. Also, Eddie Mayo is survived by 4 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, an “adopted” godson, Nathan Roy, and numerous relatives and friends and a loving church family.
