Deacon Vaudie Al Shamlin, was born on April 12th in Monroe, Louisiana. He was the 3rd among 9 brothers and sisters. He was united in marriage to the late Vivian Shamlin who gave her time and spiritual talent serving the Nurses Corp at Shiloh Baptist Church. To this union, two daughters were born, C. Renee Watkins and Saundra D. McArthur. Deacon Shamlin attended the Ouachita Parish Public Schools in Richwood, Louisiana. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Education from Tennessee State University. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; a charter member of the Agoissi (#3500) Toastmaster International. He also was a member of St. Mark’s Lodge #7, 32 Mason of the L.D. Esaton Consistory #21, Alla Baba Temple #53. He was drafted and served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War as a Petty Officer, First Class. At an early age, he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and joined the Union Baptist Church at Bosco, Louisiana, subsequent to coming to Columbus, Ohio in 1951. Deacon Shamlin first worked for DCSC for 20 years. Upon his retirement from DCSC, he was employed by Borden Corporation as a Personnel Administrator in the Northern Dairy Division. Deacon Shamlin joined Shiloh Baptist Church in 1951. He taught Sunday School in the Intermediate and Senior High School Departments for many years. He was the first Deacon ordained by Rev. Dr. Otha Gilyard in 1996. He was the Chair Emeritus, Program and Social Committee of the Deacon Board. He was well known for his fervent prayers in his southern accent. Deacon Shamlin was an avid gardner and a great cook. He was famous for his greens and barbeque sauce recipe which were his master pieces. Deacon Shamlin was a Christian soldier who believed in unity and in fellowship. He loved his family very much. He was kind and generous and he shared his blessings with others. All you would have to do was ask and he would provide. He was God-fearing and had a loving heart. He is preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Shamlin. He is survived by loving daughters, C. Renee (Preston) Watkins and Saundra (John) McArthur; grandchildren, Cheya Dixon, Preston (Robin) Watkins II, Christopher (Christina) Watkins; great grandchildren, Melvin Dixon II, Meleya Dixon; brother, Gwynn (Brunetta) Shamlin; sisters, Lenevia Robinson, Malvin Shamlin-Smith, a host of nieces, nephews and many other relatives, church family and friends.
