Daniel Louis Mann, Jr., age 88, died at Kobacker House, Thursday, October 13, 2011. He was born to Daniel L. Mann, Sr., and Annie Coleman Mann on March 9, 1923, in Leaksville, NC. The family moved to Philadelphia, PA when Daniel was one year old. He attended public schools in Philadelphia and graduated from Northeast High School, Class of 1941. By this time, he was affectionately known as “Danny.” Danny attended Wilberforce University and enlisted in the United States Army where he reached the rank of Master Sergeant. During his military years, he received a Meritorious Service Award and a Bronze Service Star. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Upon his return to the United States, he enrolled in the Howard University School of Law, Washington, D.C., and graduated in the Class of 1951 with a J.D. Degree. It was during this time at Howard Law School that he met his bride of 60 years, Shirley Jones, who was also a student at the Law School and a graduate of the Class of 1951. To this union were born two daughters, Dawne Mann Hurley and Henri Mann Gilliam Moore (Anthony). Upon completion of law school, the couple lived in Washington, D.C. They eventually moved to Columbus, Ohio. Danny was admitted to the Ohio State Bar Association in 1955. Governor C. William O’Neill appointed him as Assistant Attorney General for the State of Ohio. He was later appointed as Assistant Director of Highway Safety. This position included the Ohio State Safety Patrol and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. These opportunities were the first offered to an African-American in the State of Ohio. Danny subsequently entered the private practice of law, from which he retired in December 2010. Danny was a member of St. Philip Episcopal Church for over 40 years and served on the Vestry and the Capital Fund. He was also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Sigma Pi Phi Boule (Lambda Chapter), the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the National Urban League and the Columbus Bar Association. Predeceased by his parents, a brother Harold Mann, and a sister Evelyn Russell, Danny is survived by his loving wife, their daughters and their grandchildren, Morgan Hurley, Danielle Gilliam-Moore, Keil Moore and Alexandra Moore, nieces Nancy Mann Dabney and Stephanie Wall (Rodney), cousin Frederick Swanson (Esther) and other relatives. Danny was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and will be deeply missed by all.
