Catherine Virginia Holmes

March 6, 1921 — February 1, 2017

We honor the Life, Love and Legacy of a great woman of valor; Mother Catherine V. Mouton Holmes; a Christian woman who lived a life of dedication and faithfulness to God, family and friends. She will always be remembered for her melodious voice and neat appearance. Caring for others was her Ministry and passion. Catherine was born on March 6, 1921 to John Cass and Loucinda Bartie Mouton in Orange, Texas. She was raised in Cameron, LA; as Christian parents they imparted in her a strong faith and love for the Lord. She was educated in Cameron and Calcasieu Parish School Systems. She later furthered her education in the Pinellas County School System, of St. Petersburg, Florida. She served God in every aspect of her life. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, Cameron, LA.; where she was a faithful member under the leadership of Rev. R. B. House until the church was destroyed by Hurricane Audrey on June 27, 1957. Afterwards; the family moved to Lake Charles where she united with the St. Mary Baptist Church also under the leadership of Rev. R. B. House. There she served as Deaconess and Choir Member. In 1962, the family moved to St. Petersburg, Florida where they united with the Second Bethel Baptist Church (Bethel Community Baptist Church) where she served as Sunday School Teacher, Nursery Teacher, Pulpit Aide, Mission and member of the B. V. Lester Choir under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Enoch D. Davis; Rev. Howard Jones, Sr. and Rev. Manuel Sykes. She later moved to Columbus, Ohio where she worshipped with the Calvary Tremont Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Harold Hudson. She was the loving and devoted wife of the Rev. Nathaniel B. Holmes. To this union were six children born. She was a housewife and self-employed childcare giver. Affectionately known to many as Ma-Holmes or Grandma; she cared for and loved many children She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; grandson Peyton Kyle Rolax; siblings Viola Mouton Singleton, Emma Lois Mouton, Robert Mouton, Mary Mouton Savoy, Susie Mouton LaSalle, Kenneth R. Mouton and Rev. Roland E. Mouton, Sr. Loving and kind in all her ways, upright and just to the end of her days; Sincere and true, in her heart and mind, Beautiful memories, she left behind to be cherished by her children; Nathaniel Ray Holmes, Naomi (Keith) Johnson, Patty Cloy, Billie Holmes, Sandra (Clifton) Ford and Emma (George) Banks. Sister Geneva Laws; sisters-in-law Arrie Mae Holmes, Mary Mouton and Oletha Mouton, Fifteen Grand-children, Thirtyeight great-grandchildren, and twenty-two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
